Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.

For part of our Australian History and Society class our group travelled to the Kimberley to learn about Aboriginal culture in Australia. I have never met more beautiful people or spent time in such a different setting than when in Broome. The lifestyle, attitudes and honesty of the Morgan family (Aboriginal family whom we spent our trip with) has truly changed my outlook on life at home.
One of the most powerful messages that I will carry with me throughout my final year in college and into my future career is the importance of awareness through education. The Morgan's stated that it is the courage to educate people about controversial and sensitive subjects that is arguably the most important trait to foster growth in society.
Someday, I hope to be a counselor for individuals struggling with eating disorders, an issue which is often avoided due to sensitivity and discomfort. I hope to raise awareness for eating disorders and provide support so as to help turn the epidemic around. Colin Morgan taught me one of the most valuable lessons in my college career and it goes as follows; with education and desire to learn, we can grow as both an individual and collectively as a society to overcome the things that pose problems.

Why did you choose the program in which you participated?

I have never been outside the country and I wanted to travel somewhere that I wouldn't easily access in the future. I figured there was no better time than the present to travel and live half way around the world! Luckily, Australia provided many relevant classes to fulfill my general requirements, which was crucial with a busy dietetics schedule. The trip allowed me to stay on track and go somewhere I had only dreamed of! I also had the opportunity to volunteer with an organization related to my future career goals.

Describe your overall study abroad experience.

Going abroad was, hands-down, the highlight of my college career. It gave me time to explore a new environment and learn through experience, which results in possibly the most valuable lessons.
There are amazing adventures waiting around every corner and you will have the opportunity to experience culture and meet people who will leave a lasting impression.

How has the trip affected you? How are you different for having completed the experience?

The trip has definitely affected me in the most positive of manners. Going abroad gives you the time to travel and learn about yourself, strengths, weaknesses and everything in between. As previously stated, the lessons I have taken from school trips and projects have helped form my position on education and my future career.
It has given me the opportunity to meet 27 wonderful people, all of whom mean the world to me. The environment created by study abroad is truly unique in that there is an indescribable bond formed within the group which is one of the most precious gifts we were given.
When thrown into a new culture and situation I learned how to stand on my own two feet as well as ask for help. I will take the lessons learned from my classmates and experiences abroad with me throughout future endeavors.

What advice do you have for future Study Abroad Students?

Take advantage of every opportunity presented to you. Although cliché, it is truly a once and a lifetime opportunity. You will take away exactly what you put in! Every day is precious and the time will disappear before you know it.
