Katie Elmquist

Katie Elmquist is an Ambassador who studied abroad in Spain.

Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.

One specific cultural experience I had in Segovia was my participation in "Dia de las mujeres" ("Ladies Day") festivities. A group of us walked to a small town on the outskirts of Segovia called Zamaramala and not only got to try various Spanish dishes that Spanish vendors had set up, but also got to see the burning of a male doll in honor of the ladies. All the Spaniards, both men and women, took pride in this festival and it was a neat experience to participate in.

Why did you choose the program in which you participated?

I wanted to study abroad to be able to practice my second language, Spanish, in a native country. I could not pass up the opportunity to live and explore a different country. CSB/SJU has such wonderful study abroad programs, and by going to Spain, I was able to fully experience the culture, people, and language in its entirety in the quaint town of Segovia.

Describe your overall study abroad experience.

It was amazing. If I had the opportunity to go back to Segovia/Spain in general, I would go in a heartbeat. I loved Segovia. The city was the perfect place to live and learn the language. Along with that, as a Hispanic Studies major, I wanted to come back from Spain with a greater Spanish-speaking and listening ability. I was able to improve my Spanish through the amazing opportunities that this program presents. Living with a host family was a great way to practice, along with participating in IE University's (the University students attend in Segovia) intramural sports. All of the professors are great and want you to improve, too. One of my professors, Pilar, even helped me get the opportunity to tutor two Spanish boys and help them practice their English, focusing on their Natural Science coursework. Finally, the group excursions we had were a great way to explore the different regions of Spain and allowed our group to become closer.

How has the trip affected you? How are you different for having completed the experience?

This trip allowed me to grow as Bennie in so many ways. Culturally I broadened my horizons and opened my arms and fully embraced the new, Spanish culture. I now have a "traveler's itch" and desire, even more, to learn and become more educated on other international cultures. I am more aware of who I am and what my culture is.

What advice do you have for future Study Abroad Students?

Get excited. Studying in Spain is the experience of a lifetime. Don't ever turn down an opportunity you were given. Open your arms and embrace the culture, although it may be different and foreign, by doing this, you will get the best experience possible.
