Kathryn Campbell

Kathryn Campbell is an Ambassador who studied abroad in France

Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.

I was looking for a way to get more involved with the locals, so I began tutoring two local girls in English. It was wonderful to spend time with a French family in their home. They were so welcoming, and even invited me to have dinner with them. Some of the family members didn't speak any English, so it was awesome to have to rely entirely on my French skills to talk with them. It was an incredible experience to regularly carry on a conversation entirely in French with native speakers.

Why did you choose the program in which you participated?

I love traveling and experiencing other cultures, so study abroad was an absolute must for me. I decided to study French my freshman year at CSB/SJU, and I knew going to France would be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to improve my language skills by being immersed in the language and culture. I was also looking forward to traveling independently throughout Europe.

How has the trip affected you? How are you different for having completed the experience?

I really learned how to rely on myself to figure out difficult, awkward, or uncomfortable situations. I am so much more independent and confident, and I know I can handle any situation that comes my way. I really discovered who I am as a person and my place in this world. I have a new appreciation for language, and a broader perspective on the world.

What advice do you have for future Study Abroad Students?

GO. Don't hold back. Put yourself out there and push your comfort zone. Take time to relax when you need to. Build long-lasting connections to your host country. Take advantage of everything possible - you will probably regret the things you didn't do rather than the things you did.
