Kathleen Omerza

Kathleen Omerza is an Ambassador who studied abroad in Austria.

Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.

Interacting with the community was amazing. Meeting new people from all over the world at the university, talking to people at our favorite restaurants, trying to find our way around and asking for help. Being immersed in something completely different was phenomenal. One moment that stands out the most right now is the sense of community, especially around Christmas. There were Christmas markets everywhere, and everyone in the city would come and shop and enjoy some drinks or snacks and enjoy one another's company. It was a great feeling and I felt really connected to Salzburg at that time.

Why did you choose the program in which you participated?

The first reason was because I am studying German. I also went because I had been to the area before, and absolutely loved it. I love Salzburg and all the countries surrounding and wanted to explore more of the area and learn more about the various European cultures.

Describe your overall study abroad experience.

Studying Abroad was the best four months of my life. I learned more about myself and the world than I have in the previous 2 years of college. I feel so blessed and wouldn't have traded that experience for anything in the world.

How has the trip affected you? How are you different for having completed the experience?

I am much more independent. I am not afraid to get lost, ask for help, feel helpless, take chances, and go for it. I have learned to live in the moment, not take anything for granted, appreciate the people around me, and work with others whom I don't agree with or don't speak the same language as.
My communication skills have also multiplied. My German has improved as well as learning to communicate with those who do not speak German or English.

What advice do you have for future Study Abroad Students?

Just Do It. From applying, to stepping on and off the plane, to going on adventures in your host country. This is YOUR opportunity. Take a hold of it, embrace it, because it WILL change your life. Also, Journal. Take 5-10 minutes every day to write down your thoughts. You can't remember every detail and it gets harder to remember as the time passes by, so hold on to those precious memories by writing them down.
