Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.
Every Monday and Tuesday volunteering at the community center in the Missionvale Township showed me what poverty was. It was amazing to be able to dedicate my time to those people in need. I have really appreciated everything so much more.
Why did you choose the program in which you participated?
I wanted to study abroad to enrich my college experience and to see the world. When else can you go and live in another country for four months? I chose South Africa because it was the one place that I would not travel to alone and it was a very unique program in that it offered volunteering.
Describe your overall study abroad experience.
It was the best time of my life. I loved South Africa but I would recommend any program. The experience abroad is one you can never duplicate.
How has the trip affected you? How are you different for having completed the experience?
I think about my experience in South Africa every day. I feel that I am more confident in myself and feel more comfortable going out into uncomfortable situations.
What advice do you have for future Study Abroad Students?
Make the most of your time abroad. Do not have any regrets coming back. Just get out there and experience life!
