Jessica Solfest
Jessica Solfest is an Ambassador who studied abroad in Australia.
Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.
The Broome trip was a cultural immersion into Aborigine life and I learned a lot, not only about the indigenous people, but about the importance of listening to others and accepting myself.
Why did you choose the program in which you participated?
I wanted to study abroad because I love to travel! I enjoy participating in other cultures' traditions and celebrations, learning their values, and ways of daily life. By physically becoming a part of a completely different environment, I gained perspective in ways that I would not otherwise. I made as much as possible out of this amazing experience by making friends, joining clubs and organizations, and integrating myself into the Australian community.
Describe your overall study abroad experience.
I would definitely recommend studying abroad! I have not met anyone who did not love their study abroad experience. Living in another country for such an extended period of time gives one a unique and more in-depth taste of the culture that he or she would not have by merely traveling
How has the trip affected you? How are you different for having completed the experience?
I am much more self-confident and able to manage my time and resources effectively
What advice do you have for future Study Abroad Students?
Get out and experience culture! Meet native people and join community organizations and events. Diving in headfirst is the best way to learn as much as possible and acclimate quickly
