Jacob Waletzko
Jacob Waletzko is an Ambassador who studied abroad in China.
Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.
One of the best experiences I had on the trip was meeting random people that wanted to meet an American. They were extremely friendly and invited you to their homes and were very excited to meet somebody culturally different than them.
Why did you choose the program in which you participated?
I wanted to have a very different experience in another country and learn a lot about a different culture. I chose China because it was the most different from the United States.
Describe your overall study abroad experience.
I would describe it as life-changing. It is a great way to meet a new group of people from CSBSJU as well as everyone you meet in the country. An awesome way to be on your own and explore a different part of the world and learn about a new culture. Also, it is incredibly fun!
How has the trip affected you? How are you different for having completed the experience?
I have learned a lot about how people treat others here in the United States. If I know that there are people from China, I will try to welcome them and treat them like they did when I was in their country. I have changed to appreciate what I have here in America, because it is just so different in China.
What advice do you have for future Study Abroad Students?
My advice would be to get out there and meet as many people as possible. Enjoy every single moment of it because it goes by fast and you will wish that you were back. Do your homework, but learn as much about the culture as you can from experiences with friends.
