Grace Janssen
Grace Janssen is an Ambassador who studied abroad in Guatemala.
Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.
I will never forget the one on one language classes I had at Celas Maya. The teachers are there to help you improve your Spanish, learn more about different aspects of the Guatemalan culture, and to be your friend. One weekend a couple of the students were invited to one of the teacher's house for some traditional cooking and a chance to spend more time together. It is times such as these with these amazing people that I will never forget.
Why did you choose the program in which you participated?
I decided to stay abroad because I wanted to have an adventure outside of the CSBSJU bubble during my four years as an undergrad here at Saint Bens. I was also bitten by the travel bug and knew that I wanted to immerse myself in another culture. I chose Guatemala out of the three Spanish programs because of its unique volunteering opportunity. I also knew living in an impoverished country would challenge me in a very profound way.
Describe your overall study abroad experience.
In one word...INCREDIBLE! I learned more about myself than I could have imagined. I traveled to new places, challenged myself in different ways, made new amazing friendships, and learned new things. Going abroad is something that has forever changed who I am for the better.
How has the trip affected you? How are you different for having completed the experience?
Guatemala taught me to always be grateful for everything that has been given to me. Also, family life is extremely important in Guatemalan culture and I by experiencing that for four months I came home with a stronger appreciation and desire to spend quality time with my family. Environmental degradation was noticeable and difficult to improve.
Being an environmental studies major, I struggled with the lack of green movements and this deepened my interest in international sustainable development.
What advice do you have for future Study Abroad Students?
Experience as much as you can, take every opportunity. Go on a school trip, check out a new cafe, go to the market, spend time with your family and Guatemalan friends, learn how to salsa, cook Guatemalan food, speak as much Spanish as possible, and just make sure to enjoy every day of this semester
