Gavin Miller
Gavin Miller is an Ambassador who studied abroad in Australia.
Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.
Specifically for the Australian study abroad program, we get the opportunity to travel in the Outback, with the indigenous people of Australia. I could have not experienced what I did during this week anywhere else in the world. This experience was realizing, and reflecting on what my culture is at home. This reflecting was specifically on the American Indians and the struggles that they go through. This realization and reflection would have not happened if I hadn't studied abroad.
Why did you choose the program in which you participated?
I wanted to get to know my classmates that I would not have gotten to know if I did not study abroad. I intentionally picked a program that none of my friends were intending on going to. (this became true)
I also felt that studying abroad furthered my interest in some sort of international business. (this became true)
Describe your overall study abroad experience.
I would have not had the experiences that I did with those I shared it with if I had not studied abroad in Australia. (I know I keep reiterating this but it is the truth, and this is one thing that I will let those who are considering to study abroad know) these experiences include reflecting on my own culture and realizing how different our accents are (compared to the perspective culture that that student might be in). I know this is a little part of the whole scheme of things, it still played a part in my experience.
How has the trip affected you? How are you different for having completed the experience?
My experience studying abroad in Australia has positively affected me. I have learned to work with all different demographics which I would have not had if I had not studied abroad. Primarily work with the aboriginals of Australia. Being able to fluently work with different demographics such as I was able to considering the experiences that I had well I was in Australia, I argue that was an important lesson I have learned.
What advice do you have for future Study Abroad Students?
Specifically for Australia and this can go for any individual that is looking to study abroad, try to travel (see) experience as much as possible with the amount of time you do have. Your time is limited and with this limited time get out there and do as much as possible because I know for a fact you will not regret it once you come back home.Do you have questions about studying abroad in Australia?
