Elizabeth McMillan
Elizabeth McMillan is an Ambassador who studied abroad in Rome and Greece.
Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.
A specific cultural experience that I had on my trip that made a lasting impression took place while I was in Athens. For our theology class, we were assigned to approach a Greek citizen that we had previously not met and ask them about their faith. Our professor insured us that the large majority of the people we asked would love to be interviewed, however, it was still very intimidating to go up and start a conversation with a person I did not know. I was afraid there would be a language barrier or the individual would be unwilling to participate. Nonetheless, I am glad I found the courage to strike up this conversation because I gained a "real life" perspective.
Why did you choose the program in which you participated?
I wanted to study abroad because I was ready to expand my understanding of the world and how people from other cultures behave. Also, I had never been outside the United States (besides Canada) so I was extremely interested in experiencing a new culture. I choose the Roman/Greco program because my faith is a huge part of my life. Because of this, I wanted to learn more about my Roman Catholic faith in its birthplace. Furthermore, during my First Year Seminar class, our topic focused on Greek mythology. I really enjoyed this topic and thought that it would be fascinating to further my previous knowledge in Greece.
Describe your overall study abroad experience.
I would tell prospective students that your study abroad trip is a trip of a lifetime. I got to see and learn about places that I will probably never have a chance to visit again. Also, I developed lasting relationships with people whom I did not know prior to our trip and strengthen relationships with individuals whom I knew before going abroad.
How has the trip affected you? How are you different for having completed the experience?
This trip has opened my eyes to a world outside the walls of the Midwest. Not only did I learn about the history and political system of Italy and Greece, I also gained a greater understanding of the daily lives of people in these two countries. Also, before going abroad, one of my goals was to become more independent. Not only did I learn how to find my way around a foreign supermarket, I also learned how easy it was to read a map (even if it is not in English), book flights and train tickets and figure out the local bus systems.
What advice do you have for future Study Abroad Students?
The advice I have for future Study Abroad students is, again, this is a trip of a life time. You never know when or if this opportunity will arise again, so take advantage of it while you have the chance. Also, your study abroad experience is really what you make of it. No one else can have your experiences for you; it is up to you to take an initiative and experience all you can. But most of all enjoy every minute. At times you may feel as though you just want to go back home and see your family, I know I did, but I encourage you to continue learning and having fun and know that your family will be there when you get back waiting to hear the many stories you will have to tell.
