Catherine Quinn is an Ambassador who studied abroad in Cork
Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you decide on this program?
I chose to study abroad in Ireland because ever since I was little, I had always dreamed of going to Ireland. Coming from a very Irish family, it just sort of made sense. Studying in Cork also worked well with my major to fit in all my courses so I could graduate on time.
Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your program that made a lasting impression.
In Ireland, they have incredible jam sessions in the pubs any given night. On a sunday night, my friend Natalie and I went to one of our favorite pubs to witness something I won't ever forget. We went upstairs and it was a group of about 20 or so older people who took their turn to sing a song. They were able to recall these songs off the tops of their heads and it sounded wonderful.
Describe your overall study abroad experience.
This experience was as many people say, the adventure of a life time. I look back and realize how fortunate I was to not only live in Ireland for six months, but travel to ten different countries, experience the cultures and just do anything! If I could go back at any second, I wouldn't hesitate.
Based on your experiences abroad, what are some of the benefits of spending a semester abroad? How has studying abroad contributed to your personal, academic, and professional development?
There were so many benefits from spending a semester abroad. With the Cork program I really found out how to be one hundred percent independent; paying off my bills on time, organizing my own scheduling and travel arrangements and just living on my own. School was very different, seeing as we attended a larger university so that was rather different.
What advice can you offer for CSB/SJU students who are considering or planning to study abroad?
Don't consider to go abroad, do it. It is the most wonderful experience and you won't regret it. While abroad, don't hesitate to do anything because it is a once in a lifetime opportunity.
