Bridget Reilly
Bridget Reilly is an Ambassador who studied abroad in Spain.
Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.
In Spain, sitting down for a meal is not simply meant to eat. Both lunch and dinner are centered around family and friends, since those two are valued so highly in their culture. Spain is one of the programs in which the participants are lucky enough to live with a host family and experience this first-hand. My host family was absolutely phenomenal. I was the luckiest girl in the world and now have a Spanish mother for life, as we keep in contact to this day. I have realized that in the Spanish culture family is number one. In the U.S. meal-time is usually rushed and sometimes lonely, but I have now experience something new, something that I want to incorporate into my life. I am proud to say that this cultural experience has made a huge impression on me and changed the way I live my life.
Why did you choose the program in which you participated?
Studying abroad at a nationally ranked institution was something I had been anticipating and excited for since before I can remember. Being a Hispanic Studies major, I intentionally chose the Spain program to become more fluent, but also to experience a Spanish culture. I heard countless positive things from older students about their experiences in Spain and knew because of the where they lived, the lessons they learned and their improvement in their Spanish language, that it was a perfect fit.
Describe your overall study abroad experience.
If you want to be a part of something life changing, personally challenging and exceptionally rewarding, studying abroad is a must. This is the perfect chance for you to grasp a once in a life time opportunity. Why have regrets when you can seize the day?
How has the trip affected you? How are you different for having completed the experience?
Reflecting on my time well spent in Spain, I believe that I am not only a better person, but I am more self-aware and culturally open. I lived in a different country for four months and will always have a part of my heart in Segovia with the beautiful host family I lived with. Seeing, living and feeling the traditions of a completely foreign culture have allowed me to expand my perspective and grow as an individual. Not only did my Spanish improve, but my confidence rose, perspective broadened, and passion for life exploded. I am a better me after completing my study abroad experience.
What advice do you have for future Study Abroad Students?
Make the time you spend abroad memorable. Talk to previous participants, but all in all, make sure to make your trip your own. Don't be afraid to be vulnerable or admit your homesickness- essentially everyone feels it. Take advantage of everything that comes your way- you will look back on your time abroad often so make sure you don't have regrets. But mostly, have fun and choose a program that best fits who you are and who you want to become.
