Amanda Olsen

Amanda Olsen is an Ambassador who studied abroad in Australia.

Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.

A really cool cultural experience I had was the opportunity to participate in was an archeology dig. Students were able to uncover a deserted town from many years ago. We were able to find ancient artifacts which helped us learn even more about Australian people.

Why did you choose the program in which you participated?

Since I was in high school, I always dreamed of studying abroad. I was yearning for new adventures and experiences. I was not disappointed. I picked the Australia study abroad program because I wanted to travel to a place that spoke English. I also liked that I was able to attend classes at a university which gave me the opportunity to interact with many native Australian students. These students and other locals taught me what it truly means to be Australian

Describe your overall study abroad experience.

It was fantastic and probably the best four months of my life. I saw so many amazing things that I would never be able to experience in Minnesota. I petted kangaroos, went sailing, swam in the ocean, learned Australian slang and met aboriginal people. Even if you are hesitant about studying abroad, do it!

How has the trip affected you? How are you different for having completed the experience?

The trip has greatly affected me! I am so much more independent and open minded. By seeing a different part of the world, I realize and appreciate how special and unique both Australia and the United States are.

What advice do you have for future Study Abroad Students?

Be opened minded! There will be so many opportunities presented everyday you are abroad. It is your job to take these opportunities and experience everything you can. This may be the only time you will be studying abroad. Make the most of it!
