Amanda Ammentorp

Amanda Ammentorp is an Ambassador who studied abroad in Australia.

Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.

When we went to Broome and spent time with Aboriginal people I had an intense cultural experience. Our guide, Colin, told us that we need to take the blinders off and talked about how technology wasn't necessary. He also showed us Aboriginal culture and how not to judge others. This experience really shaped the way I approach other cultures in my thoughts today and has opened my eyes to not look at other cultures with a negative mindset, but to be positive about embracing other cultures, seeing that difference is there, and that it is good to be different.

Why did you choose the program in which you participated?

I wanted to study abroad so I could experience a new culture and their academic program. It was interesting for me to go to Australia so I could see how the Biology program was run over in Australia. I also wanted to get out of my comfort zone and get out of the CSB/SJU bubble and open my eyes to what's out there in the world. I also chose Australia because I wanted an English-speaking country, but also a diverse country. Being a biology major, I was also very interested in the Australian wildlife.

Describe your overall study abroad experience.

I think that studying abroad is life-changing. It puts you out of your comfort zone and gives you a chance to find your true identity outside of what others tell you. I will never forget this experience and this trip and would go again in a second if I could.

How has the trip affected you? How are you different for having completed the experience?

I have become more independent on this trip. I have figured out my priorities in life on this trip. I have figured out how to make every dollar count. Like mentioned above, I have had my eyes opened toward other people and have become less judgmental. I think that I have grown positively out of this experience and hope to share this with others.

What advice do you have for future Study Abroad Students?

Future Study Abroad students need to plan out what they want to do so they can try to accomplish everything before they leave their site. Although 5 months seems like a long time it flies by very quickly. Be careful what you spend money on and make sure it's worth it. Take on every opportunity you can and meet new people.
