Alyson Brandell is an Ambassador who studied abroad in Chile.
Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.
There are no specific experiences that made an impression on me, however the combined experiences that I was able to have while living with a host family stay with me forever. They taught me so much about themselves and their culture and in turn I learned more about myself.
Why did you choose the program in which you participated?
I have always been fascinated by the Spanish language and wanted to challenge myself by submersing in a culture different from my own. I chose the Chile study abroad program because it gave me a chance to experience a culture completely different from the one I am familiar with, and made me leave my comfort zone.
Describe your overall study abroad experience.
There are few words that can be used to sum up and describe an experience like the one that I experienced while I was abroad. Although if I had to sum up my experience in one word it would be unforgettable. I really feel like I am a different person as a result of my experience abroad.
How has the trip affected you? How are you different for having completed the experience?
My trip to Chile has allowed me to be more confident in myself as an individual. While in a place where you are cut off from daily life as you know it, it really allows you to figure out what makes you tick, what makes you you.
What advice do you have for future Study Abroad Students?
This is going to be the time of your life, so never take a moment for granted while you are abroad. Embrace every situation as an opportunity.
