Program Description
This program is completed in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. Students complete a portion of their community health clinical during this experience. Students will complete 10 hours of seminar related to the culture, health care, and social justice issues present in South African society. Students will participate in providing health care in the township clinics and homes; and service learning opportunities in the townships. Past service learning projects have included health education in the community, play therapy, and neighborhood cleanup in the townships.
Students in this experience will learn to effectively communicate with diverse groups and disciplines using a variety of strategies. In addition, nursing students will utilize professional values and standards to provide community-based and population focused care.
Program Cost
The estimated Program Fee is $2000. The final price will be confirmed with participants early in the spring semester.
This price includes:
- Accommodations during the program
- Local transportation
- Course related excursions including: cultural attractions and tours as outlined in the program itinerary
- Program administrative costs and fees
- Some group meals
The Program Fee does not include:
- Round trip air fare
- Most meals
- Personal spending money
- Activities, housing or transportation not associated with or included in the program.
Housing
Students will stay in an apartment setting with 3 other students. The apartments include cooking facilities, private bathrooms, sitting rooms and televisions. Housekeeping is provided and laundry services are available. Internet and international telephone service are available for a fee. The apartments are within walking distance of several restaurants and eateries and multiple cultural opportunities.

Applications are due October 8, 2013. A $300 down payment will be required upon acceptance to the program. A maximum of 10 students will be accepted into this program.
