Health & Safety Information for Parents
Responsible Study Abroad: Good Practices for Health and Safety*Our participants’ parents/guardians should:
- Be informed about and involved in the decision of the participant to apply for and be accepted for a position on a particular program.
- Obtain and carefully evaluate participant program materials, as well as related health, safety, and security information.
- Discuss with your son or daughter his or her travel plans and activities that may be independent of the study abroad program.
- Engage in a thorough discussion of safety and behavior issues, insurance needs, and emergency procedures related to living abroad.
- Be responsive to requests from the OEA for information regarding the participant.
- Keep in touch with your son or daughter while they are abroad. Agree as a family how often you will talk. It is oftentimes very helpful to establish a regular calling time (i.e. every other Sunday evening).
- Be aware that sometimes your son or daughter, rather than the OEA, may most appropriately provide some information.
