CSB and SJU students participate in Washington Summer Study Program

Twelve students from the College of Saint Benedict, St. Joseph, and Saint John's University, Collegeville, are participating in summer internship experiences through the Washington Summer Study Program from the end of May to the beginning of August.

The program, operated by the political science department at CSB and SJU in conjunction with The Eugene J. McCarthy Center for Public Policy and Civic Engagement at Saint John's University serving students from both CSB and SJU, is designed to provide students an opportunity to live and work in the Washington, D.C., area while earning academic credit. Each student serves in a congressional office, on a committee staff, in a government agency, in a nonprofit organization or with a public affairs group, learning and working in a community. They apply for their internships based on their interests.

In addition to the work experience, program co-directors Matt Lindstrom, Edward L. Henry professor of political science at CSB and SJU, and Claire Haeg, associate professor of political science at CSB and SJU, conduct seminars and arrange supplemental meetings with alumnae/i and other professionals to enhance the learning experience. Christi Siver, assistant professor of political science at CSB and SJU, will also come to Washington, D.C., this summer and conduct seminars.

Students serving internships from CSB include:     

  • Mary Baumgard, political science major from Avon, Minn., National Women's Political Caucus.
  • Paidamoyo Chikate, Gender Studies and English major from Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, Center for Women's Policy Studies.
  • Madeline Page, environmental studies and political science major from Tucson, Ariz., Environment America.
  • Julia Renner, political science major from Shoreview, Minn., Capital Partners for Education.

Students serving internships from SJU include:

  • John Berquist, political science major from Coon Rapids, Minn., Red Cross.
  • Clement Huaweilang Dai, economics major from Shanghai, China, American Council on Renewable Energy.
  • Evan Howard, political science and social science major from Rochester, Minn., Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.).
  • Sean Lynch, political science major from St. Cloud, Minn., AHRI trade group.
  • Devin Massopust, political science major from Rapid City, S.D., Sen. Tim Johnson (D-S.D.).
  • Eric Schilling, political science major from St. Louis Park, Minn., Sen. Amy Klobuchar, (D-Minn.).
  • Ryan Wold, philosophy and political science major from Brooklyn Park, Minn., Public Affairs Council.
  • Daniel Wolgamott, political science major from Elkhorn, Neb., Rep. Tim Walz (D-Minn.)
