The 10th annual Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day is Wednesday, April 28 at the College of Saint Benedict, St. Joseph, and Saint John's University, Collegeville.

The day recognizes and honors the achievements of students who have undertaken significant research, scholarship or creative works during the course of the past year. Over 500 research and presentations from all academic disciplines will be highlighted throughout the day.

Student presentations take place from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on both campuses. Several academic departments are also hosting receptions or award ceremonies from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.

For a complete listing of the day's schedule and presentations, please see here.

William CrononWilliam Cronon delivers the plenary address, "Kennecott Journey," at 10:30 a.m. in the Stephen B. Humphrey Theater, SJU. His speech will also be broadcast live in the Haehn Campus Center at CSB.

Cronon is the Frederick Jackson Turner Professor of History, Geography and Environmental Studies at the University of Wisconsin, a position he has held since 1992. In 2003, he was also named Vilas Research Professor at Wisconsin, the university's most distinguished professorship.

He studies American environmental history and the history of the American West. Cronon seeks to understand the history of human interactions with the natural world - how we depend on the ecosystems around us to sustain our material lives, how we modify the landscapes in which we live and work, and how our ideas of nature shape our relationships with the world around us.

CSB and SJU have incorporated Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day into the academic calendar so that students and visitors can attend presentations without conflicting with regularly held classes.

Two other events, which showcase the colleges' commitment to scholarship and creativity, will be held on Tuesday, April 27.

The inaugural induction of CSB and SJU students into the Theta of Minnesota Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa is at 5 p.m. at Alumnae Hall, Haehn Campus Center, CSB. The chapter was established in the fall of 2009 by the nation's oldest academic honor society.

The Eric Rego Big Idea Competition begins at 5:45 p.m. at Sexton Commons, SJU. All students are invited to present an idea that would make the world, or things in it, a better place. Individuals or teams must submit a description online here and then describe the idea during a 90-second "elevator pitch" to a panel of judges. The Donald McNeely Center for Entrepreneurship annually sponsors this event in honor of Eric Rego, an E-Scholar student and alumnus of SJU who passed away in 2008.
