SJU golfers tied for 17th in national tournament

The Saint John's University golf team is tied for 17th place after the first round of the NCAA Division III national golf tournament Tuesday under rainy conditions in Hershey, Penn.
The Johnnies were 29-over-par on the Hershey Country Club-East Course, and are tied with Trinity College (Conn.), which played on Hershey Links Course. Skidmore College leads the tournament with a 7-over-par total.
Saint John's was led by freshman Dennis Granath (Bandhagen, Sweden) who shot a 1-over-par round of 72. He is tied with six other golfers for sixth-place in the individual portion of the meet.
Senior Ben Vangsness (Alexandria, Minn.) and freshman Mark Giorgi (Red Wing, Minn.) each shot rounds of 80 for SJU.
The Johnnies are making their 11th consecutive trip to the NCAA Division III tournament. They won Division III national titles in 2007 and 2008.
The tournament continues daily through Friday, May 14. Saint John's plays Wednesday on the Hershey Links Course. The field of 37 teams will be cut to 23 following Wednesday's round.
