Study Tours
The McCarthy Center believes in the importance of experiential learning as a way to engage students in the many layers of the policy making process. Study tours bring students face-to-face with key players and organizations working on current policy issues like green urban planning, immigration, and rural development. If you have an idea for a future study tour (especially something local), please contact Stacy Penk at spenk@csbsju.edu with your idea.
On Monday, November 7, 2011, Robson Scholars Kelci Reiner and Evan Lowder organized a study tour that gave students the chance to learn more about homelessness. They visited the Dorothy Day Center, a Catholic Charities-based homelessness shelter in St. Paul, the Minnesota Housing Finance Agency, a government agency at the center of public policy in homelessness in Minnesota, and the Hearth Connection, a nonprofit that acts as an intermediary between government and local nonprofits to end homelessness in Minnesota. Below are a few photos of the students at the sites.

Students as the MN Housing Finance Agency
In February 2011, we had a Study Tour of the public transportation system in the Twin Cities. Students and faculty began the day by taking the North Star Rail from Big Lake to Minneapolis, and then they met with representatives from Metro Transit, Transit for Livable Communities, the Minnesota Transportation Committee, and the St. Paul Light Rail Corridor Extension Project. Everyone who participated thought it was a fantastic learning experience.

In April 2011, another Study Tour was held. This time the participants learned more about the education system in Minnesota and met with educators, policy-makers, teacher's union, and the MN Department of Education. They also learned more about alternative teaching certifications, education achievement gap, the MN budget deficit, and what that all means for education in Minnesota.
