Polidazzle is a McCarthy Center networking event for CSB/SJU students, alumni/ae, staff and faculty interested in public policy and civic life. This reception originally coincided with the Minneapolis "Holidazzle" parade, but we have since moved it to Saint Paul. The gathering offers an excellent opportunity for current students to meet alumnae/i who are active in civic and political life as professionals or volunteers. Feel free to invite other alums you know. This is an open house reception with complimentary drinks and abudant hors d'oeuvres.

The McCarthy Center selects and sponsors all expenses for one CSB student and one SJU student to attend this conference. SCUSA is designed to provide a premier educational experience for student delegates offering the opportunity to interact both individually and in group settings with foreign policy experts and to learn from each other. The goal is that when delegates depart West Point, they do so with a greater understanding of the complexities surrounding foreign policy development. In addition, the conference provides an outstanding forum for the development of networking relations that will prove to be invaluable for many years to come.

The conference provides an opportunity for analysts and plicy makers to explore timely topics that reflect the importance of analysis in creating partnerships and formulating public policy decisions in government. "The Effect of New Forms of Media on Civic Engagement and Democracy"

Kathleen Hall Jamieson is a nationally-recognized specialist on political communication, political advertising, and political campaigns. She is the Elizabeth Ware Packard Professor of Communication at the Annenberg School for Communication and Walter and Leonore Annenberg Director of the Annenberg Public Policy Center at the University of Pennsylvania. She is also the Director of FactCheck.org, which examines the factual truth or falsity of claims made in political campaigns. She is a 1964 graduate of St. Benedict's High School (located in what is now the HAB Building on the CSB campus). She worked on Eugene McCarthy's 1968 presidential campaign, and interviewed him for her book Packaging the Presidency. She gave the College of St. Benedict Commencement Address in 2003. Dr. Jamieson has authored or co-authored 16 books, and her most recent work is The Obama Victory: How Media, Money, and Messages Shaped the 2008 Election. Dr. Jamieson has received numerous teaching and writing awards throughout her career.

"The Tea Party Movement: A New Form of Civic Engagement?"
The recently-founded Tea Party Movement energized conservative voters in the 2010 elections and vows that it is "here to stay." Tea Party activists see their movement as the resurrection of grassroots democracy against an out-of-control federal government. The movements' critics see it not as positive civic engagement but as cultivating a negative climate of suspicion and distrust. This panel will examine how the Tea Party organizes and mobilizes supporters and compare it with other forms of civic engagement. Panelists: Dan Proft, WLS-AM 890 (Chicago) talk show host and political commentator, and Claire Haeg, CSB/SJU Political Science Department and specialist on neo-populist political movements. This event is co-sponsored by Students Fostering Conservative Thought.

Healthcare Politics in Congress- HR-3: "No Taxpayer Funding For Abortion Act"
A bill recently introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives, HR-3, would prohibit all federal funds, tax credits, or tax deductions to all public or private insurance policies that include abortion coverage, except in the case of "forcible rape" or to save the life of the mother.
This panel will examine the political and ethical dimensions of the legislation, and invite commentary from all points of view.

Burma (also called Myanmar) is a south Asia nation with a long history and a troubled present, ruled by a closed and secretive military regime that battles against the nation's democracy movement. Hundreds of thousands of Burmese citizens have become refugees in recent years. In this panel some Burmese refugees connected with the CSB/SJU community will tell their story. The event will be moderated by Dr. Christi Siver, Assistant Professor of Political Science.

Third Annual Celebration of John Brandl and His Quest for Common Ground

Celebrate the life and service of John Brandl who served as an associate professor, director of the School of Public Affairs, and was later dean of the Humphrey School at the University of Minnesota. John Brandl served 12 years as a member of the Minnesota Legislature, on the Minnesota House of Representatives and later represented south Minneapolis in the Minnesota Senate. This year marks the centennial of Hubert H. Humphrey's birth and the centennial of Ronald Regan's birth.

"Running to be Fair and Impartial: Are Judges Free to Make Campaign Promises?"

Most state court judges secure their positions by campaigning for office. Some state codes of judicial ethics have restricted judicial candidates from making campaign promises. But recent court decisions have struck down some of these codes as violations of judicial candidates' First Amendment free-speech rights. This has led to further litigation and a call for stricter rules on when judges must abstain from participating in cases. Justice Frank Sullivan, Jr. of the Indiana Supreme Court will examine these developments from both legal and political perspectives. Frank Sullivan, Jr. has served on the Indiana Supreme Court since 1993. He is the recipient of several awards for advancing opportunities for minority lawyers in the legal profession, and is a frequent participant in legal education activities.

The judicial year in many jurisdictions around the world is traditionally opened with a Red Mass. The celebration of the Mass is designed to provide judges, lawyers, civic leaders and academics of all faiths the opportunity to reflect on the powers and responsibilities that are part of their offices. Together, Red Mass participants ask God to grant the virtues and gifts necessary for the proper and just administration of their duties. The Red Mass name comes from the red vestments and garments that early legal participants wore on this occasion.

Dr. Christopher B. Howard, the 24th President of Hampden-Sydney College, is one of the youngest college presidents in the United States. Hampden-Sydney, a liberal arts college for men, has been in continuous operation since classes began in 1775 on its historic campus 60 miles southwest of Richmond, VA. Dr. Howard is a distinguished graduate of the US Air Force Academy where he earned a BS in political science. A Rhodes Scholar, he earned his Doctorate in politics at Oxford University and a MBA with distinction from the Harvard Business School. Prior to his appointment as President of Hampden-Sydney College in 2009, Dr. Howard served as Vice President for Leadership & Strategic Initiatives at the University of Oklahoma where he also served as the Director of the Honors College Leadership Center and a President's Associates Presidential Professor.

Dr. Emile Nakhleh is a Catholic Arab from Nazareth, Israel. He is a retired professor from Mount St Mary's College in Maryland. He also has retired after several years with the CIA first as a Scholar-in-Residence and then as a full-time staffer. He directed the Political Islam Strategic Analysis Program at CIA. He recently wrote a book titled A Necessary Engagement: Reinventing America's Relations with the Muslim World (Princeton University Press, 2009).

Deborah L. Wince-Smith is the president and CEO of the Council on Competitiveness, the only place where CEOs, labor leaders and university presidents are working together to ensure that Americans prosper in the global economy. Founded in 1986, this unique business-labor-academia coalition recommends actionable public policy solutions to make America more competitive in the global marketplace. As president of the Council, Wince-Smith spearheaded the groundbreaking National Innovation Initiative (NII), which played a pivotal role in creating a reinvigorated U.S. competitiveness movement. The NII shaped the bipartisan America COMPETES Act, created state and regional innovation initiatives, and brought a global focus to innovation.

Inspiring Leaders Certificate Program(ILCP) and the Eugene J McCarthy Center is teaming up to provide a one day "Saturday Blitz" which will offer students the chance to earn all of the required credits for the DIAMOND Certificate. This certificate will focus on civic leadership and will provide participants with an enhanced civic knowledge and leadership skills necessary for individual and organizational success in community and civic leadership. This certificate serves as a catalyst for civic leadership by building upon civic knowledge and enhancing participatory civic skills such as memo writing, media management, meeting facilitation, public speaking, grant writing, and networking. Through engagement in public action and reflection of the varying levels of civic leadership, participants will acquire skills for authentic community-based leadership.

The Trial of the Catonsville Nine

History comes alive as The Actors' Gang examines the 1968 trial of two catholic priests and seven fellow catholic activists who committed an act of civil disobedience in protest of the War in Vietnam. This act of civil dissent galvanized the national protest movement. While condemned as criminals in a court of law, they were hailed as patriots in the streets during one of America's most turbulent eras.

"Marv Davidov and Carol Masters, Reflections of a Non-Violent Revolutionary"

Marv's career began in the Civil Rights movement and as a Freedom Rider in the 1960s and moved on to opposition to the Vietnam War and the draft. Within the peace movement, he is a national legend for his role in the Honeywell Project which over two decades challenged and eventually convinced Honeywell to stop its manufacture of lethal military weapons. In the 1990s, Marv remained active in organizing labor and teaching the strategies of non-violence in the classroom and on the streets. He has taught courses in the strategies and politics of non-violence at Carlton College and the University of St. Thomas.
