"State of the Union Viewing Party"

Join the McCarthy Center as we tune in for the President's Annual "State of the Union" address! We had a great turnout last year and we hope to do so again. Stick around or just stop in, either way it promises to be a blast!

Thursday, January 26th

Politics & a Pint: "Drinking Laws"

Where: Brother Willie's Pub, SJU    When: 4:30 p.m.

This P&P discussion looks into a topic that is especially hot on college campuses - drinking age. Why is the drinking age 21? What legal framework is behind drinking laws? How do drinking laws affect the prevalence of binge drinking? How does the US compare to other countries? Come and leave as you please. Pizza, pop, and pints (for those of you who are 21) are all available. We hope to see you there!

February 15th - 16th

The Mark Kennedy Frontiers of Freedom Lecture Series with Steve Yurek

An SJU Alum, Steve Yurek will be on campus as part of Mark Kennedy's "Frontiers in Freedom" Lecture Series. Mr. Yurek has been Chief Executive Officer and President at The Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Regrigeration Institute (AHRI) 2007. Mr. Yurek also has been Director-at-large at American National Standards Institute since January 1, 2009. As part of his "mini-residentcy" Mr. Yurek has generously offered his time to guest-teach in various classes and will be giving his keynote address on Thursday, February 16 at 7:00pm in Gorecki 204.

Politics & a Pint: Mitch Pearlstein "From Family Collapse to America's Decline"

Where: Brother Willie's Pub    When: 4:30 p.m.

In this P&P we are joined by Mitch Pearlstein, the Founder and President of The Center for the American Experiment, a public poilcy think tank in Minneapolis. Mr. Pearlstein will be discussing his new book "From Family Collapse to America's Decline" which ties higher rates of family fragmentation to the public poicy issues of education and crime.

Film Showing, "Hot Coffee"

Where: Gorecki 204    When: 6:30 p.m.

Attorneys Mike Hall and Mike Bryant are cosponsoring a St. Cloud area showing of the documentary "Hot Coffee". The film examines the impact of tort reform on the United States judicial system. The film premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival.

Thursday, March 15th

Politics & a Pint; "Eurozone Crisis"

Where: Brother Willie's Pub     When: 4:30 p.m.

Similar to the rest of the world, European Union is facing challenging economic conditions. Our conversation will explore what is unique about the EU's state of affairs and why Americans should care about the conflicts in Greece, Itlay, and the rest of the Eurozone. Students who studied abroad in Europe in the fall of 2011 will contribute to the discussion by relating their first-hand accounts what they experienced.

Monday, March 19th

Annual McCarthy Residency Student Debate "Resolution: Global financial markets are nothing more than the world's largest casino"

Where: Alumni Lounge, SJU     When: 7:30 p.m.

Given the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis it becomes clear that the international financial market and its operations have a profound impact on the domestic economy. In this debate students will use research to debate whether or not global financial markets are beneficial or a gamble.

Tuesday, March 20th

5th Annual McCarthy Residency Keynote: "The Experiences of a Humanitarian Crusader in a Chaotic World"

Where: Quad 264     When: 7:30 p.m.

The McCarthy Center is proud to once again present our annual McCarthy Scholar in Residency running from Monday, March 19th - Thursday March 22nd, 2012. This year we are fortunate enough to have SJU Alum John Chromy as our distinguished resident. Mr. Chromy is currently serving as the Vice President of the Cooperating Housing Foundation International. He will be giving a talk to students and faculty on his work with CHF and the global issues he has encountered in his time there.

Thursday, March 22nd

Day at the Capitol & the Legislative Leaders Reception

Where: State Capitol Building, St. Paul   When: Reception at  2:00pm in ROOM 318

Students from CSB and SJU will join private college students from across the state at the Minnesota Capitol to show their suport for the Minnesota State Grant Program. State lawmakers will convene to begin budget and policy deliberations and funding for student financial aid will be a critical part of those discussions. Nearly 1,000 CSB and SJU students received a Minnesota State Grant this year. This is an opportunity to show lawmakers how important these decisions are to college students. 

Thursday, April 19th

Politics & a Pint: "Campaign Finance Laws"

Where: Brother Willie's Pub     When 4:30 p.m.

Because it is a presidential election year, 2012 is an exciting and important time in United States politics. Representatives from both College Democrats and College Republicans will come together to discuss the campaign season. Topics of conversation will include super PAC's and campaign finance laws, significant policy issues, promotional strategies, among many other themes.
