Concurrent Session Descriptions

As a part of the 2013 MN Study Abroad Returnee Conference you will choose two concurrent sessions to attend. Please see the complete descriptions below and indicate your preferred choices (plus one alternate) on your registration form. You will be asked to preregister for your rotating sessions so that we can best balance the number of conference attendees in each session.
- Go Abroad Again: Teaching and Short-Term Work
- Get Engaged: Local and International Volunteer Opportunities
- Digging Deeper: Stories & Identity
- Graduate School at Home & Abroad
- Storytelling, Cartoons and Study Abroad: how to creatively shape your future
- International Careers at Home & Abroad
- Go Abroad Again: Teaching and Short Term Work
Have you returned from studying abroad only to dream of going abroad again? If so, attend this session to learn more about short-term employment and teaching English positions. Teaching English is one of the most feasible ways to find paid positions abroad, so this session will focus on these opportunities. You will be given an overview of strategies, programs, resources, and things to consider to make your dream a reality. You'll also have the opportunity to ask questions of the presenter who advises on these opportunities and has taught abroad in Japan
- Get Engaged: Local and International Volunteer Opportunities
Explore diverse opportunities to engage with communities at home and abroad as a volunteer. Learn about local non-profits with an international focus, as well as organizations providing life-changing opportunities to go abroad again as a volunteer.
- Digging Deeper: Stories and Identity
In this session participants will reflect upon their experiences abroad, share stories and ponder questions. Come prepared to listen, think and share with the intent of spending focused time processing your experience and how it has shaped your identity. Participants should bring a picture or artifact that represents a meaningful remnant of their experience.
- Graduate School at Home and Abroad
Are you interested in attending graduate school abroad or staying stateside, but focusing on international issues? This presentation will address many of the common questions associated with applying for graduate school in other countries. In addition resources will be provided about internationally focused programs in the US.
- Storytelling, Cartoons and Study Abroad: how to creatively shape your future
You've got skills you didn't even know you were developing while abroad. In this session, we'll attempt to tease them out and talk about how they apply to your future. You'll explore how your experience can continue to shape you and your career path. You'll learn to nurture the power of your creative self and leverage it to design a successful future. We'll talk about the importance of narrative and how to apply it to digital media narratives. And you'll leave the session armed with resources to help you continue to develop personally and professionally.
- International Careers at Home & Abroad
Hear from a panel of experienced professionals who spend time working with global colleagues, or who themselves must travel abroad for a percentage of time, or who actually work abroad (we'll use Skype to conference this perspective in). This panel will represent various industries and careers from for-profit and nonprofit, to education and government. Learn how they started out, what challenges they face, and what they enjoy most about their work.
