Chinese Course Offerings
The Chinese Language and Culture Program started in the fall of 1968 as part of the Tri-College East Asian Studies Program. It is one of the earliest Chinese language and culture programs in the state of Minnesota.
The following courses serve to fulfill the global language requirement at CSB/SJU:
- Chinese 111 (Elementary Chinese I)
- Chinese 112 (Elementary Chinese II)
- Chinese 211 (Intermediate Chinese I)
We also offer the following upper division classes:
- CHIN 212 (Intermediate Chinese II)
- CHIN 311 (Chinese Conversation/Composition I)
- CHIN 312 (Chinese Conversation/Composition II)
- MCLT 315: Chinese Folklore
Fulfills humanities and gender requirements, and counts toward the Chinese minor (through the MCL Department), Asian Studies major and minor (through the Asian Studies Program) - GEND 290B Chinese Women in Literature

The Chinese Minor Program
We offer a Chinese minor (20 credits) through the Department of Modern and Classical Languages (MCL).
This includes the following classes:
- CHIN 211 (4) or CHIN 215 abroad
- CHIN 212 (4) or CHIN 216 abroad
- CHIN 311 or 312 (4) or CHIN 315 or 316 abroad
- MCLT 315, 316, or 319 (4)
- And one non-MCL course from the Asian Studies Program course list (4)
Cultural Activities
There are numerous opportunities throughout each semester for students to engage in cultural activities on campus. Among those events are the Dumpling Social, Chinese Corner, and Movie Night.

Study Abroad in China
Students at CSB/SJU have the option of studying in China for an entire semester or for a three-week summer term.
As a study abroad student in China, you have the opportunity to admire Chinese traditions in calligraphy and painting, to participate in Wushu or martial arts, and to appreciate the natural beauty of the rural countryside, and bamboo forests of the panda.
- Explore the cultural heritage and historical richness of China.
- Travel to Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Dongguan, Guangzhou, Zhanjiang, Xuwen, and Hainan Island.
- Be introduced to intercultural communication, Chinese language, Chinese history, and Chinese culture.
- Stay with a Chinese host family.
- Participate in the traditional forms and rituals of martial arts.

The Chinese Language and Culture Program emphasizes enhancing students' research skills to help prepare them for independent or collaborative research in Asia-related fields.

Great Reasons to Study Chinese

The Chinese Program at CSB/SJU offers students a chance to discover the unique Chinese culture and language, whether through on-campus courses, events, and activities, or through semester-long and shorter-term study abroad programs.
