Writers at Home
August 28, 2012

Indian writer Kunal Basu in the spring of 2012.
Regardless of the country, literature serves as a thread that weaves together the fabric of the culture. It helps us remember our successes with the finished fabric, yet learn from our failures with the chance to unravel the threads.
The Writers at Home program represents a unique partnership between the Literary Arts Institute of the College of Saint Benedict and Office for Education Abroad (OEA), as it brings CSB/SJU study abroad students together with writers from their host country. Often, these writers' works have been part of the required study abroad seminar, so they have relevance to the students' academic as well as cultural experience. The writers' visits have three parts: an address and reading open to the public, a smaller meeting with just CSB/SJU students, and an excursion to an area with literary significance. Many of these writers' visits have been supported by U.S. Dept. of Education Title VI Undergraduate International Studies and Foreign Languages grants.
Started in the 2010-2011 academic year, the program has expanded to the majority of the OEA's seventeen semester long study abroad programs. For photos and student testimonials of the writers' visits, please visit the writers' individual pages.
