 Deborah Baker received the 2012 Sister Mariella Gable Prize for The Convert: A Tale of Exile and Extremism.  On December 5th, she came to the College of Saint Benedict, where she visited classes and gave a public reading that night.  In addition, the Literary Arts Institute of the College of Saint Benedict sponsored a reading at Common Good Books on December 6th.  Baker appeared at these events as part of the Warner Reading Series through a generous grant from the Manitou Fund.

British writer Geoff Dyer was in residence at the College of Saint Benedict from November 18th t0 20th.  At the November 18th screening of Stalker, he provided insight on the Andrei Tarkovski film on which Dyer bases his newest book, Zona.  Dyer read some essays from his additional works at the well-attended  reading the next night.

Poet, memorist, and producer Nick Flynn joined us for two screenings of Being Flynn, here and at the Walker Art Institute.  In the film based on Flynn's memoir, actress Lili Taylor played the character of Joy.  Flynn read from his unpublished memoir, and the two of them answered questions from the audience and a moderated panel.

On April 17, students and faculty from many departments welcomed back Scott Russell Sanders.  He read from Earth Works: Selected Essays, which has received positive reviews from readers and critics alike, as well as shared predictions for the future, the combination of which made for an enjoyable and literary night.

Sarah Vowell

New York Times' bestselling author Sarah Vowell was here on April 13th to give an educational and entertaining presentation on the American history on which she bases her books. She read from a sampling of her books as well, which gave the audience an even greater sense of the wit that makes her so well-known on NPR's "This American Life" and her in columns for the New York Times.

Papermaker and book artist Mary Hark, Assistant Professor of Art at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and CSB class of '78, was here to tell the story of TakeTime Press in Kumasi, Ghana, and its first publication, Listen, Listen - Adadam Agofomma.  The evening included a showing of this book, acquired by Clemens Library, which honors the musical legacy of Ghana's National Living Treasure Koo Nimo.

Highlighting the December 6th event, Koo Nimo shared stories and songs to celebrate Asante culture.

Jana Pullman, book artist, binder and conservator, lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota and has been involved in the book arts since 1983. She received her graduate training at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and at the University of Iowa and has held numerous positions in the book arts. Currently, she is an adjunct faculty member in the Art Department at the University of Minnesota, an instructor at the Minnesota Center for Book Arts and teaches workshops throughout the country. 

Pullman gave one-day workshops on November 12th and 13th in the Welle Book Arts Studio.

 

SeaSeamus Heaneymus Heaney

 Seamus Heaney has been a Visiting Professor at Harvard University from 1985 to 2006; he was a Boylston Professor of Rhetoric and Oratory from 1985 to 1997 and Ralph Waldo Emerson Poet in Residence from 1998 to 2006.  A native of Northern Ireland, he presently resides in Dublin.  He joined us for  a poetry reading on October 2nd.

Heaney is widely regarded as one of the major poets of the twentieth century.  He has attracted a readership on multiple continents and has won prestegious literary awards and honors, including the Nobel Prize in 1995.

 

 

 

Terry Eagleton An Evening with Terry Eagleton

Terry Eagleton served as a Thomas Warton Professor of English Literature at the University of Oxford from 1992 to 2001 and John Edward Taylor Professor of English at the University of Manchester from 2001 to 2008.  In 2009, he came back to the University of Notre Dame as a Distinguished Visitor in the Department of English.  He traveled to the College of Saint Benedict for a talk on September 26.

Eagleton is known as one of Britain's most influencial literary theorists.  He has written more than forty books.

Card Making Event

Mary Bruno, owner of Bruno Press, taught 20 students how to make their own cards using a letterpress. They recieved 10 of their own own handmade cards, envelopes, and an inside look at printing from an expert. Not a CSBSJU Student but interested in attending a workshop like this? A Reading by Tiphanie Yanique

Tiphanie Yanique is a professor of Creative Writing at Drew University. She is from the Virgin Islands and lives most of the year in Brooklyn, New York. She joined us for a book reading of How to Escape from a Leper Colony on April 4th.

Yanique is a fiction writer, poet and essayist. She's the winner of a Pushcart Prize, the Kore Press Fiction Prize, The Academy of American Poets Prize, a Fulbright Scholarship in writing, the Boston Review Fiction Prize, and the 2010 Rona Jaffe Prize in Fiction. 

Her story collection How to Escape from a Leper Colony was published by Graywolf Press.

 

   Sustainability and Publishing Panel

Economics professor Dr. Ernie Diedrich moderated a panel with guests Don Leeper, the president of BookMobile, Keith Goetzman, from The Utne Reader,  and Kelly Spitzner, Communications Coordinator at the Green Press Initiative. As they examined the impact of publishing on the environment and green practices at publishing companies, the audience engaged in asking questions about the controversial role of technology supporting sustainability.

Book Lover's Night featuring Peter Smith

SJU alum Peter Smith is the author of fiction, poetry, magazine and op-ed articles, along with weekly appearances on Minnesota Public Radio's Morning Edition with Cathy Wurzer.  Smith discussed his new collection of essays, A Porch Sofa Almanac, which portrays and reflects on everyday Minnesotan life.  According to Smith, "The entire state comes across as some wonderful, slightly quirky treasure unearthed at a church basement rummage sale."  Smith is currently a resident of Hopkins, MN. 

 

 

 

 

 


Doreen Baingana

A Reading by Doreen Baingana

Doreen grew up in Uganda and currently works as an editor for a small literary press called Storymoja in Nairobi, Kenya.

Her collection of short stories, Tropical Fish: Tales from Entebbe, published in 2005,  won the prestigious Association of Writer's and Writing Programs (AWP) prize for short fiction and the Commonwealth Writer's prize for best first book in the African region.

"An Evening with David Sedaris" was co-sponsored by fine Arts Programming and the Literary Arts Institute of the College of Saint Benedict.

David Sedaris is a master satirist with a penchant for the absurd and politically incorrect. With sardonic wit and incisive social critiques, Sedaris has become one of America's pre-eminent humor writers.

Sedaris is the author of collections of personal essays, Naked, Me Talk Pretty One Day, Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, and When Your are Engulfed in Flames, each of which became a bestseller.

I Curse the River of Time

Per Petterson reads from his new novel

Per Petterson, Norwegian-born author of internationally-acclaimed novel, Out Stealing Horses, visited the College of Saint Benedict to read from his new novel, I Curse The River Of Time. This was one out of only five public appearances he made in the United States in support of his new book.

Papermaking Class

Saint John's University campus

Participants will meet at the Prairie Kiosk to get a brief description of the plants used to make this signature paper.  We will then move to the New Science Center to see the rest of the process and make our own paper.  There will be a $5 fee for Arboretum Members age 10 and up, a $10 fee for non-members, and children ages 9 and under can participate free of charge.  Please register online, email arboretum@csbsju.edu or by calling 320-363-3163 by June 30th at noon.
