SJU’s Stephen B. Humphrey Theater
The Auditorium-Music Hall officially opened on May 10, 1928, with a formal celebration by hundreds of visitors, guests and the SJU community. In his address, the Rt. Rev. President, Abbot Alcuin, O.S.B. explained the purpose of the Auditorium. It was made subservient to a higher aim, the larger educational interest of culture and the fine arts.
In 1985 a 2.5 million dollar renovation was completed in which organ and choral practice rooms were complete, the main theater was reshaped and remodeled and finally, the basement was completely renovated.
The Auditorium-Music Hall was dedicated to Stephen Benedict Humphrey.
Stephen Benedict Humphrey 1906-1984
Teacher, mentor, friend to three generations of students, Mr. Humphrey - as his students knew him - was a model of liberal education at its best. He was all of a piece, his mind as well groomed as his dress. His diction flowed from his thought, precise without pedantry, knowledgeable without arrogance. He was a connoisseur of people and occupations. He delighted in a well turned phrase and a good argument. Above all, he delighted in friends and has as many as a generous lifetime among colleagues and students could well allow. To him this theater is dedicated.
The Stephen B. Humphrey annually hosts 200 public events including: the college-sponsored Fine Arts Series; Cantus, plays, concerts, speakers’ series and other regionally-produced offerings.
A professional staff manages the variety of presentations and plans for a balance of offerings. The Fine Arts Series programming reflects the Stephen B. Humphrey Theater's many facets – it offers events which augment the academic needs, explore cultural diversity, entertain, showcase young artists and entice young audience members to become life-long supporters of and participants in the arts.
