How to Apply for Need-Based Aid
- Step 1 - Complete the FAFSA
- Step 2 - Complete the CSB/SJU Financial Aid Application
- Step 3 - Receive Award
- Step 4 - Apply for Loans
To be consider for grants or loans, you must apply each year. After January 1st, complete the following steps to apply for financial aid for the next academic year. Priority deadline for returning students to apply for aid is June 1.
Step 1 - Complete the FAFSA
7-10 days after submitting your taxes, complete the FAFSA online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Select the "IRS Data Retrevial" to prepopulate your tax information, as well as reduce the risk that you are selected for verification.

Step 2 - Complete the CSB/SJU Financial Aid Application
For 2013-2014 Academic Year:
Complete the online 2013-2014 CSB/SJU Financial Aid Application. Email, mail or fax the printed and signed 2013-2014 Certification Page to the Financial Aid Office.
For 2012-2013 Academic Year:
Complete the online 2012-2013 CSB/SJU Financial Aid Application. Email, mail or fax the printed and signed 2012-2013 Certification Page to the Financial Aid Office.
It is to your advantage to complete the FAFSA and the CSB/SJU Financial Aid Application prior to June 1, since some funds may no longer be available after that date.
Step 3 - Receive Award
Your financial aid award will be e-mailed to your campus e-mail in the summer. The Financial Aid Office will send important notices to your CSB/SJU e-mail; please open and read these messages.
Step 4 - Apply for Loans
If you choose to take out a loan, follow the directions listed on the e-mail with your award information. Details on the various loan types can be found on the Loan section of this website. Be sure to accept/deny any federal loan on Banner Web Self Service by the deadline listed on the e-mail.
Eligibility Requirements
In order to be eligible for federal student assistance, the student must:
- Be a citizen or eligible non-citizen of the United States with a valid Social Security #.
- Be classified as degree-seeking and enrolled at least half-time.
- Not owe a refund on a federal student grant or be in default on a federal student loan.
- Meet Satisfactory Academic Progress standards.
Special Circumstances
If you, or your family, experience a substantial change in income due to death, disability, unemployment, divorce, or similar circumstances, you are encouraged to contact the Financial Aid Office. In some cases, upon submission of supporting documentation, your financial aid eligibility may be adjusted.
