Teaching English as a Second Language with K-12 License Course Requirements

Total Credits Required: 24 [ESL Minor] + 19-20 [Foundational Education Courses] + 16 [Student Teaching] = 59-60

TESL Minor:

Required TESL Courses (16 credits): 

  • EDUC 300 Structures of English for the ESL Teacher (4 credits) (Spring Course)
  • EDUC 301 Teaching Literacy to English Language Learners (2 credits) (Fall & Spring)
  • EDUC 302 Assessing English Language Learners (2 credits) (Fall Course)
  • EDUC 303 Theoretical Foundations of ESL (4 credits) (Fall Course) Pre-req: EDUC 300 or ENGL 387
  • EDUC 304 ESL Methods and Materials (4 Credits) (Spring Course) Pre-req: EDUC 300 or ENGL 387

Required ENGL Course (4 credits): 

  • ENGL 387 Introduction to Linguistics (4 credits)*

*ENGL 387 can be substituted with an online summer course offered through the University of Illinois EIL486 Linguistics for Language Teachers, 3 undergraduate credits, $1200.

Required Sociocultural/Intercultural Course from the following choices (4 credits): 

  • COMM 350 Intercultural Communication (4 credits)
  • HISP 337 Latino Identity in the U.S. (4 credits)
  • PCST 352 Race, Ethnicity, and Justice (4 credits)
  • ENGL 382 Race and Ethnicity (4 credits)
  • COLG 385 Study Abroad Seminar (4 credits)
  • HIST 300M- Asian American History (4 credits)
  • FREN 341 French Speaking World Today (4 credits)
  • HISP 336 Latin American Culture (4 credits)
  • HISP 356 Topics courses dealing with culture

*Other electives possible--choose with advisor

Students may also choose to take an additional Practicum Course (0-2 credits): 

  • EDUC 320 ESL Practicum Experience (0-2 credits) offered as part of study abroad or as ILP

Foundational Education Courses Required for Licensure (19-20 credits):

  • EDUC 109 Chemical Use and Abuse (1 credit)
  • EDUC 111 Introduction to Teaching and Learning in a Diverse World (4 credits)
  • EDUC 203 Human Development: Typical and Atypical/Exceptional (4 credits)
  • EDUC 212 or 213 Clinical Experience--Diversity Immersion (1 or 2 credits)
  • EDUC 310 Educational Psychology (4 credits)
  • EDUC 359 Issues in Education K-12 (1 credit)
  • EDUC 390 Human Relations (Senior Seminar) (4 credits)
