Research:

My research is concerned with studying transition-metal cluster compounds, with a focus on developing ligands that can induce the clusters to react in new ways.  Over the last 30 years, chemists have developed highly specialized ligands for controlling the chemistry of mononuclear metal complexes, but designs for ligand frameworks that are capable of supporting complexes with more than one metal, while simultaneously controlling their reactivity, has been more of a challenge.  My research will make use of a new breed of ligands designed to provide weak bonding between metal-based and ligand-based electrons.  This work will involve air-sensitive synthesis and purification as well as the characterization of new compounds by a wide range of analytical methods, including UV-vis, IR, NMR, and EPR spectroscopies; X-ray crystallography; and electrochemical measurements
