The Sister Nancy Hynes Institute for Women's Leadership seeks to encourage women's leadership development though our programs and events. Learn more about select topics concerning gender and women's issues, challenge yourself to try to new things and see different perspectives, and get involved!

September 11th: Involvement Fair - HCC Fieldhouse @ 5pm
September 12th: Yoga and Yogurt - HCC @ 7pm
Come learn about the art of yoga! Learn and practice a great way to relieve stress during the year. Yogurt and toppings will be provided for a fun, healthy snack.
September 13th: Girl's Night IN - HUNGER GAMES - Large Conference Room, Upper Mary Commons @ 8:30pm
The IWL will be showing The Hunger Games for the first Girl's Night IN of the semester. Come cheer on your favorite district and stay for a discussion after about the feminist themes in the movie. Popcorn will be provided.
September 20th: The Invisible War documentary screening - Theresa Reception Center, Main Building @ 7pm
The cover-up of rape in the US military is one of the most tragic crimes in US history. Join the IWL in a screening of the film The Invisible War, winner of the Audience Award at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival. Discussion after the film will be led by Christi Siver of the Political Science Department. This event is offered for optional Sapphire ILCP certificate credit. Open to Bennies and Johnnies!
September 26th: What the Hell is Gender Studies?! - Gorecki 204B @ 7pm
Does the thought of taking a Gender Studies class make you cringe? Do you ever question why students are required to have a Gender credit to graduate? Join faculty of the Gender Studies Department to learn just what Gender Studies is, why Gender classes are part of the Common Curriculum and how you can benefit from a Gender class. Open to Bennies and Johnnies!
September 28th: Lunch with a Leader with Susan Burns - @ 11:30am
Join the IWL for Lunch with a Leader with alumna Susan Burns: an attorney; founder and president of Susan Burns LLC dba Dynamical Discovery; and an adjunct professor at Saint Catherine University. Lunch is provided. RSVP - space is limited to 15 students.
October 1st and 2nd: Half the Sky Documentary Showing - TBD @ 8pm
Join the IWL in watching the documentary Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide, based on the book of the same title by Nicholas Kristoff and Sheryl WuDunn. This documentary brings awareness to the problems of sex trafficking and maternal mortality that women around the world face, and makes the case for education as a way to correct these issues. Discussion after the film will be led by Shane Miller of the Gender Studies and Communications Departments. Can't make it to the showing on the 1st? Join us on the 2nd instead! Open to Bennies and Johnnies!
October 8th: Lunch with a Leader with Lilly Ledbetter - Large Conference Room, Upper Mary Commons @ 11:30am
Join the IWL for lunch with Lilly Ledbetter! Ms. Ledbetter was the plaintiff in the ground-breaking case against Goodyear Tire Company for pay discrimination. The Lilly Ledbetter Act, named for her, was the first act signed into law by President Obama, which prevents gender discrimination for wages. Lunch will be provided. RSVP - space is limited to 20 students.
October 8th: Lilly Ledbetter talk - Gorecki Black Box Theater @7pm
Come and hear Lilly Ledbetter speak about her fight for fair pay. Be inspired by her story and learn about her activism and what you can do to fight discrimination you face in your own life. Open to Bennies and Johnnies!
October 11th: Study Abroad Fair - HCC Fieldhouse @ 2pm
Come to the Study Abroad Fair and learn about the May term trip the IWL is leading this Spring. Learn about the countries involved, the logistics of the trip, the application process and a surprise "taste" of the countries!
October 12th: Lunch with a Leader with Kim Motes - Large Conference Room, Upper Mary Commons @ 12pm
Join the IWL for lunch with Kim Motes, Vice President for Institutional Advancement at the College of Saint Benedict and Class of 1989 alumna. Learn about her leadership, her experiences at CSB and what she does to help the College. RSVP - space is limited to 15 students.
October 18th: Women, Horses, and Leadership - Fieldstone Farms @ 7pm
Do you love horses? Have you ever wanted to learn how to ride a horse? Did you know horses can teach you a lot about your leadership? Join the IWL at Fieldstone Farms, where participants will gain hands-on experience caring for and riding horses, learning how to develop leadership skills in the process. Fieldstone Farms is run by Theresa Johnson, an alumna of CSB who has her degree in equestrian arts. RSVP - space is limited.
October 25th: Voting Information Session - Gorecki Fireside @ 6pm - 7:30pm
Does voting confuse you? Do you know how to register? Or each candidate's position on issues important to you? The IWL will be holding a tabling session on voting for the 2012 elections. Stop by and grab handouts on candidates' platforms, the registration process, and where to vote on campus. In addition, representatives from College Democrats and College republicans will be available to answer specific questions.
October 30th: Girl's Night IN - IRON JAWED ANGELS - Centennial Commons @ 9pm
Get ready to vote! Come join the IWL in a showing of the film "Iron Jawed Angels." This movie portrays the struggles that Suffragists went through in the 1910s and 1920s in order to gain an amendment allowing women to vote. Stay for a discussion after about these women's tactics and struggles. Popcorn will be provided
November 1st: What the Hell is Feminism?! - TBD @ 7pm
What do you think when you hear the word "Feminism?" And why is it such a big deal anyway? Can men be Feminist? Join the IWL in a conversation about the F-Word, what it means, why it's important, who can "claim the name" of Feminist, and what it really means to be a Feminist (here's a hint - you don't have to burn your bra!) Discussion will be led by Ozzie Mayers of the Gender Studies Department. Open to Bennies and Johnnies!

November 3rd: Women on the Wall - SJU Palestra @ 11am
Come test your skills at the Climbing Wall at St. John's. Learn how to climb, have fun and build your confidence!
November 6th: Votes and Root Beer Floats - Gorecki Fireside @ 6pm -8pm
Vote Today! If you vote on Tuesday, November 6th, bring your "I Voted" sticker to our table in Gorecki and get a free root beer float!
November 8th: Women and Spirituality talk - Gorecki 204 BC @ 6:30pm
Kathe Schaaf, cofounder of "Gather the Women," will be coming to campus to do a workshop on "Women and Transformational Leadership." Come learn about women and spirituality, and how women can use their unique gifts to change the world!
November 13th: King Peggy Talk - Gorecki 204 AB @ 7pm
King Peggielene Bartels is a Ghana-born American woman who works as a secretary for the Ghana embassy in Washington DC. In 2008, she was chosen to succeed her uncle as King of the village of Otuam, Ghana. Come listen to her amazing story and her unique experiences with leadership as a woman-king. She will be joined by her co-author Eleanor Herman, a New York Times Bestseller. Open to Bennies and Johnnies!
November 14th: Breakfast with a Leader with King Peggy and Eleanor Herman - Gorecki 120 @ 8am -9:30am
Join the IWL for breakfast with King Peggy and Eleanor Herman! Students can come enjoy more intimate conversation with King Peggy about her leadership and experiences as a woman king. Space is limited to 20 students. Please RSVP to attend. Open to Bennies and Johnnies.
November 15th: Girl's Night IN - ERIN BROCKOVICH - Centennial Commons @ 9pm
Join the IWL for a screening of the film "Erin Brockovich," based on the life of Erin Brockovich, a legal clerk, who despite her lack of training, exposed a large company that was contaminating ground water in California. Stay after for a discussion about the leadership that this woman displayed to work for justice for the people of the community affected by this company's actions. Popcorn will be provided.
November 17th: Snowshoeing - St. John's Arboretum @ 11am
Join the IWL on a snowshoeing trip through the arboretum. Learn the skills it takes to snowshoe, take in some fresh air, and enjoy the beautiful winter scenery of the SJU Arboretum. Meet at the OLC to rent snowshoes.
November 27th: Twilight, Sexism and Feminism - TBD @7pm
Everyone knows the phenomenon of Twilight. But is the series sexist? Can Bella be considered a feminist character? The answer may be more complicated than you think. Join the IWL in a discussion on the Twilight books and whether they promote sexist stereotypes or not, what messages are given about relationships and a feminist interpretation of the novels. Discussion will be led by Heather Nicole Saladino, Resident Director of Lottie Hall and Coordinator of the Hynes Scholars Leadership Cohort. Open to Bennies and Johnnies
November 29th: SHEFest - O'Connell's @ 6pm
Do you have a talent you want to share with the rest of campus? Sign up to perform at SHEFest, the IWL's annual talent showcase for Bennies. Sing a song, play an instrument, read a poem, juggle - whatever you want to share with the rest of campus. Don't want to perform? Come enjoy refreshments and cheer on Bennies in the showcase, support your friends, and enjoy the talent we have right here on campus!
December 1st: Powder Ridge Ski and Snowboard Trip - Kimball, MN @ 11:30am -7pm
Do you like skiing or snowboarding during the winter? Join the IWL on a trip to Powder Ridge Ski Area in Kimball, MN. Show off your skills, or learn a new sport in the company of fellow Bennies. A bus will be provided for transportation to and from Powder Ridge.
December 4th: What the Hell is Masculinity?! - Gorecki 204B @ 7pm
What does it mean to be masculine? Are there multiple definitions? What pressures do men face in daily life? Come join the IWL in a discussion of the definition of masculinity, its effect on men, and what we can do to change it! Open to Bennies and Johnnies!
December 6th: Girl's Night IN - HOW TO LOSE A GUY IN 10 DAYS - Centennial Commons @ 9pm
Join the IWL in viewing the movie "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days." Stay after for a discussion on the gender stereotypes persisted in this movie and how these stereotypes can hinder relationships among men and women. Popcorn will be provided.
December 14th: Yoga and Yogurt - Centennial Commons Aerobic Studio @ 9am
Stressed about finals? Join the IWL in a relaxing yoga session. Get some exercise, clear your mind, and enjoy a healthy snack before you hit the books. Yogurt will be provided.
