Quick Facts
When is the season?
Spring is our regular season, usually starting the end of March until end of April with an opening our of state tournament in mid-February. Despite playing our regular season in the spring we practice year-round. We play about 12 regular season games, on both weekdays and weekends. The top eight teams from the league then advance to playoffs and the No. 1 team proceeds to the national tournament in May.
What is the practice schedule?
In the fall we practice a couple times in preparation for the spring season. Regular practices start up again in January to prepare for regular season. Practices are a couple hours long in the HCC field house. Weather permitting, we start outside in March to better prepare for the season.
Who do we play?
We are a member of the NCWLL North Central Womens Lacrosse League in the plains division. The league consists of the University of Minnesota, Gustavus Adolfus University, Bethel University, St. Cloud State University, University of St. Thomas, Augsburg College and Hamline University.
Are there tryouts?
Because we hold club status at St. Ben's, we are not permitted to hold tryouts or cut players. However, as our level of dedication and professionalism represent, we conduct our team like that of a school-sanctioned sport. A shared level of commitment is something we have worked hard for and expect. There were 22 women on the team during the 2011-2012 season.
Do we have a coach?
Yes, our coach is Travis Opgenorth. His email address is t_opgenorth@yahoo.com.
Is there any traveling?
We travel to the Twin Cities (Minneapolis/St. Paul) for our regular season games. Most games are on the weekends so there are never conflicts with classes.
We have played University of Nebraska - Lincoln, Kansas University and Creighton University in the past. For the past three years we have traveled to Santa Barbara, CA to play in the Santa Baraara Shootout against other club teams like UCSanDiego, UCBerkeley, Denver and Westminster. We also participate in a Fall Ball play-day in Moorhead, MN in October.
Thinking about playing?
We would love to talk with you! St. Ben's Lacrosse is an unique opportunity for an athlete to get that "competitive fix" (we all know and love) playing for a fast-growing and well-respected team, while creating and building great friendships that make college what it is. Feel free to contact our coach.
