Meet Our Students: Poa Xuan Yeap

Is the Asia Club at CSB/SJU only for Asians? Poa Xuan Yeap will tell you “Absolutely not!” Poa Xuan Yeap, who everyone calls PX, is the Chair of Asia Club for 2006-2007. PX is senior from Malaysia and a Physics major. PX is also active in the Asian Studies Program. Of all activities that he joined in the Asian Studies Program, PX especially enjoyed the South Asian History after 1800 class.

Besides being very talented in the natural science, PX is also a very artistic person. If you see pictures of the 2006 Asian New Year celebration and discover how wonderful the Lantern decorations were, you should give much of the credit to PX. It was PX who came up with the theme of the last Asian New Year. He also designed a T-shirt for the event and actively joined in the venue decoration process. PX’s active involvement in Asia Club helped him understand the importance of promoting cultural diversity on campus and made him decide to run for the club’s chair.

“We want to promote the idea that Asia Club is not just for Asians, but for everyone. We really want to include the American students in our community. This is one of our Board’s main goals,” said PX. He and his board members also hope to bring some outside speakers to our campus to talk about Asia.

While the new Board members will keep many of the activities from past years, like Asian Craft Night and Asian New Year, they will add new elements to the club. Building a Chinese or Japanese garden on campus is also one of their goals. The Board hopes that by building an Asian environment on campus, more students will be aware of and participates in the process of promoting culture diversity.

If PX has his wish, Asia Club will flourish like flowers in the garden and diversity on our campuses will grow and grow.
