Meet Out Students: Yumin Lu

Did you watch the well-performed play, A Mid-Summer Night’s Dream, staged by our Johnnies and Bennies last Fall? If you did, did you realize there was a Chinese actor playing the role of Philostrate. That actor was Yumin Lu, a senior Management major from China!

Lu will graduate in May. Looking back at his four years at CSB/SJU, Lu thinks that participating in theater has been his most unforgettable and rewarding experience. Lu was always interested in the arts, especially photography, so he decided to try something new in his junior year. He took an acting class for fun. Unexpectedly, the Acting Class aroused his deep-hidden interest in theater production.

Lu thinks that being involved in theater production has changed him from being an introvert to an extrovert. He has been trained on how to present himself on the stage and how to impress the audience. These were very helpful skills for someone preparing for a career in business management. If you were to meet Lu now, you would definitely think that he is an extrovert!

To successfully stage a play involves a lot of teamwork. During the process, Lu learned to became a good team player. He also acquired many leadership skills such as effective communication and cooperation. He believed that these are valuable skills that one cannot get from textbooks, but only from real life experience.

As Lu transformed from an introvert to an extrovert, he became more actively involved in on-campus activities. For example, he now takes a more active role in the annual Festivals of Cultures.

As Lu prepares for graduation in May, one thing that he really wants to see realized in the future is an increase in diversity on campus. He thinks that both American and international students are great resources to each other. They can learn a great deal from each other about their differing perspective of the world, which is very useful for both personal enrichment and career advancement.

Lu wants to take advantage of the Optional Practical Training program, and work in the United States after graduation. He hopes that he can find a job with a firm that has an international focus. This would allow him to utilize his knowledge of both China and the U.S. We wish Lu the best luck in all his future endeavors.
