Meet Our Students: An Doan

A junior Liberal Studies major at CSB/SJU, An Doan is an energetic and interesting woman from Hanoi, Vietnam.
Strongly influenced by her parents, An loves learning about other cultures as well as sharing her Vietnamese heritage with others. Being an international student on campus, An seizes every opportunity to share her culture with others in events like Festival of Cultures. She is also an active member of Asia Club, in which she learns more about other Asian cultures and gains a deeper understanding of her own.
An is currently studying Chinese language. She takes Chinese not only because it is challenging, but also because she wants to further her appreciation of Chinese culture. An said that her parents did not allow her to watch cartoons when she was young. Instead, they had An watch many classical Chinese series like Emperor Qin. In order to have a deeper understanding of Chinese culture, An is going to study abroad in China next year. She hopes to improve her proficiency in the Chinese language, learn about Chinese calligraphy and study Chinese history.
Typically, students rush home as soon as school vacations begin. However, An, burning with a desire to learn more about other cultures, uses her time and money to go traveling. In less than three years, An has been to Australia, Canada, Kenya, Peru and Trinidad! An said that the Kenya trip, which exposed to her to poverty and humanitarian issues, had a great impact on her. This trip made her more committed to community service, which lead her to the Peru service trip. After these two trips, An now describes herself as a humanitarian! To pursue her interest in African culture, An will go to South Africa for study abroad after going to China.
After graduation, An plans to either join the international business sector or do cultural research.
