2010 FSB Social

This December the Fighting Saints Battalion conducted our monthly Lab at the Saint John's University campus. The lab consisted of classroom instruction presented by the MSIV Cadets to the MSIs, IIs, and IIIs. While the Lab was both interesting and instructive, the Cadets were ready to have a little fun after a long couple of hours in the classrooms.  Following the conclusion of Lab all the Cadets gathered in Guild Hall to partake in a social to get to know one another better and boost esprit de corps. The social, which replaced a formal Dining-In this semester, was a relaxing and fun way to celebrate the end of the semester.

After closing formation the Battalion assembled in Guild Hall to have pizza, pop, and treats to start off the afternoon.  Having a social gathering in civilian clothes was a nice change to the normal high stress Class-A uniformed ones.   The atmosphere in the air was much more comfortable and positive which allowed the Cadets to interact in a low stress way.

There is a long tradition in the Army of units performing skits at social events which poke good natured fun at other members of the unit. So when everyone finished eating, each class performed skit which they had previously written and rehearsed.  Cadets were able to poke fun at MS classes above their own as well as Cadre. These skits were the highlight of the whole social because who doesn't like to have a good laugh?

The real point of this event was to see what people are like outside of ROTC and allow people to become more familiar with each other.  We see most of these people only at PT or at labs and seeing them in a gathering like this was a nice change.  When we are in uniform, often we only see part of a person, but seeing them in such a laid back setting brings out a difference in personality and stature which can help bonding and closeness you need with your fellow Soldiers in your career.

Following the skits C/BC Belmer presented awards from the Spring semester for GPA and APFT scores which recognized all the hard work Cadets have put in. Overall the social was a good success: relaxed, fun, and short.  This simple gathering was a great way to keep things efficient and get to know the people in our program a little bit better.
