Reptiles and Amphibians

Saint John’s Arboretum is home to a wide variety of amphibians and reptiles, including increasingly rare species such as the Blanding's turtle. 

 

The following frogs, turtles, snakes, salamanders, and lizards have been sighted at the arboretum. More species likely exist but have simply not been seen: 


 

Frogs
  • American Toad (Bufo americanus)
  • Bullfrog (Rana catesbeiana)
  • Cope's Gray Tree Frog (Hyla chrysoscelis)
  • Green Frog (Rana clamitans)
  • Gray Tree Frog (Hyla versicolor)
  • Northern Leopard Frog (Rana pipiens)
  • Spring Peeper (Pseudacris crucifer)
  • Mink Frog (Rana septentrionalis)
  • Western Chorus Frog (Pseudacris triseriata)
  • Wood Frog (Rana sylvatica)
Turtles
  • Snapping Turtle (Chelhydra serpentina)
  • Western Painted Turtle (Chrysemys picta belli)
  • Blanding's Turtle (Emydoidea blandingii)
Snakes
  • Redbelly Snake (Storeria occipitomaculata)
  • Plains Garter snake (Thamnophis radix)
  • Common Garter snake (Thamnophis sirtalis)
Salamanders
  • Blue-Spotted Salamander (Ambystoma laterale)
  • Eastern Tiger Salamander (Ambystoma tigrinum)
  • Central Newt (Notophthalmus viridescens louisianensis)
Lizards
  • Prairie Skink (Eumeces septentrionalis)
