The natural tendency of shade-tolerant species like maples, basswood, and ironwood to easily regenerate in their own shade prevents the optimal habitat conditions necessary for the next generation of oaks, which require extra sunlight.

From activities like collecting acorns, to cutting some trees to provide "shelter wood" for new oaks, to safeguarding the trees from a large local deer population, the Saint John's Arboretum works to ensure the survival of the oak.
